In Japan, regulation of nano scale materials is primarily the responsibility of three ministries and the Japanese equivalent of the National Science Foundation.
Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry (METI)

Ministry of Environment (MOE)

Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW)
This ministry is responsible for labor safety, drug safety and food safety. They have various position papers on nanotechnology. Please visit their website.

National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)

AIST is Japan’s largest public research institute. AIST is researching applications for nanotechnology as well as the risk management methods needed to safely develop nanotechnology. The Research Institute of Science for Safety and Sustainability (RISS) issued a paper in 2009 which discusses Japan’s position on nanomaterials safety.
